SoftServe Chile announces winners of the Second “Journalism for the Future” Award

SANTIAGO, Chile (December 10, 2024)—SoftServe recognizes outstanding journalists in Chile at the second edition of the “Journalism for the Future” Award which highlights impactful reporting on technology, science, and innovation.

With over 146 submissions from journalists across the country, the contest featured esteemed communication professionals, technology leaders, and a distinguished jury, including entrepreneur Alejandra Mustakis, Rocío Alorda (President of the Chilean Journalists Association), Jaime Oviedo (Country Manager of SoftServe Chile), and engineer and inventor Barbarita Lara.

“At SoftServe, we believe journalism plays a crucial role in building a sustainable, digital, and equitable future,” said Jaime Oviedo, Country Manager of SoftServe Chile. “Through this initiative, we aim to recognize and support the vital work of journalists who spotlight advancements in science and technology. They are our key allies in informing and inspiring society with stories that shape a better tomorrow.”

"Journalism is fundamental for the dissemination and advancement of science, and it is crucial that we continue working together to foster technology journalism that contributes to the country's development," said Aisén Etcheverry, Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile, in her message to the awards ceremony participants.

This year, applications were categorized into national and regional media. In the national category, the first prize was awarded to Paloma Ávila of CNN Chile for her report “The Impact of Methane”. This work was recognized for its clear analysis and emphasis on the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, backed by scientific evidence. The second and third places went to Javier Pontillo of Megamedia and Francisco Corvalán of La Tercera, respectively.

In the regional category, the first prize was given to journalist Ignacio Torres of the Diario de Atacama for his report “Fog: The Key Element to Achieving the Dream of Agriculture in the Desert”. The jury highlighted his innovative and rigorous approach to addressing the social, environmental, and economic impacts of using fog for sustainable agriculture in the Atacama Desert. Second place went to Anaís Castro of TVN Red Maule, and third place was awarded to Natalia Quiero of the Diario Concepción.
