Jungle Disk Migrates 4.5 PB to Google Cloud

Jungle Disk is a top data security suite for small businesses, provides businesses network security and secure cloud storage solutions to protect critical data from system failure, human error and cyberattacks. Headquartered in San Antonio, TX, the team serves over 25,000 customers across the globe with data centers in North America and Europe.

Business Challenge

The client was using an incumbent cloud provider service and needed to move 4.5 PB of data to Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for cost-saving purposes and better storage plans.

Project Description

In collaboration with Google, SoftServe set out to develop a tool that would facilitate the migration 4.5 PB of data to Google Cloud. Migrating this huge amount of data in a short timeframe without service interruption called for a fast, scalable, reliable and error proof solution.

The tool is currently in development and will be able to move data to GCP platform by specifying the exact bucket to move from at ~200 MB/s. The tool will support error logging, stop/resume/retry logic and will have deployment/monitoring process in place.

In phase one of the project, the client received a Software Architecture Document that describes general software requirements, migration tool architecture design, the technology stack the software will be built on and a system overview with general system purpose. Additionally, SoftServe provided the client with migration benchmark results based on a working prototype of a tool. Based on the benchmark results, the client was able to understand how much time the actual migration would take and what efforts would be needed for the migration.

The migration tool that will perform the data migration is expected to be completed in mid-August 2018. The tool will be deployed to real production servers ready-to-use. The Migration tool was built using DevOps best practices and continuous deployment processes. SoftServe’s team collaborated directly with Google to validate the solution prior to implementation.

SoftServe is also leveraging a subset of Google Cloud Platform services including Google Cloud Storage, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Pub/Sub, Google Stackdriver, and Cloud SQL.

Business Value

SoftServe provided Jungle Disk with a solution that is capable of migrating large chunks of data to Google Cloud platform and has logging/monitoring and deployment processes in place.
